The story of Hycontrol’s foam control technology begins in the 1980s, at the Shell Research bioscience centre in Kent, UK. Fermentation technology was used for tertiary oil recovery and for the discovery of novel molecules for agriculture. The fermenters, controls and many of the sensors were developed and built on site as the requirements exceeded what was easily commercially available. A new technology was developed to measure foam which was a considerable problem. Subsequently the technology was developed by a new start-up company called Charis Technology, which led to the production of a range of products. The first applications were in fermentation and then pharmaceutical production. As time went on, Charis found many other applications for foam control systems and developed a wider range of products, selling foam control systems to customers all over the world.
In 2013 Charis Technology was approached by level measurement experts Hycontrol, who subsequently acquired the company. Design and production were incorporated into the Hycontrol facilities in Redditch, Worcestershire. This has allowed for new product development and improvement.
Charis equipment has now been rebranded as part of the Hycontrol product family, but is still based on the expertise of that company.
